Trial of gay classmate killing draws to close

LOS ANGELES – Closing arguments are likely next week in the trial of a California teenager accused of fatally shooting a gay classmate at school.

Lawyers for Brandon McInerney are expected to rest their case Friday. The now-17-year-old is being tried as an adult in the death of Larry King.

Arguments have focused on the motive for the shooting since there's no dispute at the trial that McInerney pulled the trigger.

A police detective who is an expert on racist groups testified Thursday that McInerney was driven by white supremacist ideology. Detective Dan Swanson says he found swastikas and other Nazi images in McInerney's books.

McInerney's lawyers say he was the victim of a violent upbringing who was unable to articulate his rage and frustration at unwanted sexual advances from Larry.
