NEW ORLEANS – A federal judge has ordered a separate trial for one of six current or former police officers accused of a plot to cover up deadly shootings of unarmed New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina.
Judge Kurt Engelhardt on Wednesday set a Sept. 26 trial for retired Sgt. Gerard Dugue. Trial for five other defendants is scheduled for June. Dugue requested a separate trial, saying prosecutors plan to offer as evidence statements he made to the FBI that could incriminate others.
Sgts. Robert Gisevius and Kenneth Bowen, officer Anthony Villavaso and former officer Robert Faulcon are charged in the fatal shootings of two and wounding of four others on a bridge after Katrina in 2005. Police claimed those shot were shooting at them, but the victims were found unarmed.
