New York Police Arrest Man in Boardwalk Shooting That Left Teen Dead, 4 Wounded

NEW YORK -- A 19-year-old man was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and assault in a shooting last week on a packed New York City boardwalk that killed a teenage girl and left four others wounded, police said Monday.

Iloune Driver was being held in Brooklyn and it wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer. Victim Tysha Jones, 16, was not believed to be an intended target in the melee sparked by a beach brawl on Thursday.

She was hit in the torso and died later at a hospital. Four others were wounded, including a seaside cafe patron struck by a stray bullet. One person was critically injured.

The violence began at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday when a brawl in which bottles and an umbrella were used as weapons broke out on the beach. Two shooters later walked up from the water and began shooting into the crowded boardwalk.

Jones was with people who were the intended targets of the gunfire, police said.

The hot weather last week brought hordes of young people to Brighton Beach. The area borders Coney Island and is home to a large Russian population.

Driver was picked up by officers late Sunday on the street after witness reports, police said. They are looking for at least one more suspect.

There was no listed phone number for Driver. Police said he had a history of arrests but didn't specify whether he was in a gang.
