PELHAM, N.H. – A 21-year-old Massachusetts man was shot to death in New Hampshire early Saturday after allegedly leading police on a chase and coming at officers with a handgun, officials said.
Alberto Pagan, of Dracut, Mass., was killed in Pelham, N.H., at about 5:25 a.m., according to a statement by New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney.
Delaney said police were called at 3:30 a.m. to a home in Lowell, Mass., about a domestic assault.
Dracut fled from the home in his car toward New Hampshire, pursued by officers from several agencies who eventually stopped him in Pelham, Delaney said.
Armed with a handgun, Dracut got out of the car while officers tried to persuade him to surrender, Delaney said. But instead of surrendering, the man got back in his car and drove onto a road where an unmarked cruiser forcibly stopped the vehicle in front of a home.
Then, he advanced toward officers "while making statements to them and armed with a handgun," Delaney said. "As the man continued to advance on the officers with his handgun, several officers from multiple agencies fired at the man, hitting and killing him."
One of the officers suffered damage to his ear from the gunfire, but nobody else was hurt, officials said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
The shooting is under investigation.
